The next round for the Filipino boxer will be on Saturday, August 5 where Barriga will face Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov.

Also, the boxing event have captured most of Philippines' Olympic medals. Five out of nine medals won by the country was obtained through boxing. The last one was a silver medal by Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco in 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Interestingly, the last four Olympic medals of the country was won through boxing.

Watch: Man of Steel Trailer (Superman Movie 2013)

Have you had fun watching The Dark Knight Rises? Well, next summer, Dark Knight Director Christopher Nolan will bring to you another movie version of a popular DC Comics character: Superman in the movie entitled Man of Steel.

Darker Story of Superman
Given Nolan's style in his highly successful Dark Knight series, it is no surprise that this new movie will present Superman's story in a darker, more serious theme.

Superman is one of the most celebrated comic character of all time and children from all generation have heard of him from one time or another. Several movies have been made about him, starting as early as 1951 with the movie Superman and the Mole Men. Actor Christopher Reeve has been the most popular Superman figure in history as he starred the role in four consecutive Superman movies from 1978 (Superman) to 1987 (Superman IV). The last Superman movie was in 2006 with Superman Returns.

Man of Steel Trailer is Out
Personally, I am very excited to see the next Superman movie. I have high regards to Christopher Nolan based on his previous movies namely the Dark Knight Series and Inception. The movie will be shown in June 2013 and will star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent (a.k.a. Superman), Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent (Clark's adoptive father) and Russel Crowe as Jor-El (Superman's real father from planet Krypton).

In the meantime, here are the newly released teaser trailersof the movie Man of Steel:

Reader's Digest Study: Manila, No.22 of 36 Cities Tested for Politeness

Skyline of the City of Manila, seen from the C...
Skyline of the City of Manila, seen from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Are we Filipinos polite? Well, politeness is a blurry quality that is not easily measured because it can be affected by an individual's viewpoint and his cultural background which includes the customs and norms in his community. For instance, a polite gesture in one culture may be the exact opposite on the other.

Well, one interesting study conducted by Reader's Digest aims to measure the politeness of major cities in the world by what they determined to be a commonly accepted polite behavior in most parts of the world. They did the study by these three situations:

(1) For 20 times, the researcher follows a person in a door of a public building and see if the one ahead will hold the door for him.
(2) The researcher buys small items from 20 different stores in the city and see how many will say "thank you".
(3) The researcher drops a folder full of documents in 20 different busy locations in a city and see if somebody will help pick the scattered docs.

The result is: Manila is in 22nd place. And don't be surprised with the winner, New York City. Contrary common views that people in that wealthy city were high headed, in this study, they appeared to be the most polite scoring 80%. In comparison, Manila, Philippines scored 48%.

More Politeness Needed Especially in Government and Business
Well, whether you agree with Reader's Digest findings or not, it would be very good if we could take politeness seriously in our country. How many times you felt bad because instead of receiving assistance, the salesperson in a store obviously shows his or her reluctance to help? And how many times was your day ruined because of poor customer service when you called the tech support of your home appliance or utilities?

Well, to be fair, I think customer service in the Philippines is generally improving, thanks to the influence of BPOs who are focused in serving offshore customers at the best possible way. Also, thanks for increasing market pressures and healthy competitions that forces many companies to focus on customer relations. Well, honestly though, we are still far behind many progressive countries especially in the western hemisphere where the business culture is "serve the customer the best". There are still areas of the market where there is small or virtually no competition leaving the customer with no choice.

Also, government services is another area where the Philippines should be working on especially in politeness and customer service. Sadly, though doesn't apply to all government offices, the common impression is that when it is a government service, the process is "sluggish" and the people are not friendly and polite. Well, I personally saw progress in some government institutions with regards to this matter, thanks to new and more efficient processes being implemented in them. But again, it will take a long journey before we can be change that reputation.

If you want to see the complete list of cities tested as well as other findings and interviews, see the article of Reader's Digest here: HOW POLITE ARE WE?

"Coco Water" trends in social network Twitter minutes after President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III mentioned the term in his third State of the nation Address (SONA 2012). The term actually refers to the the  edible liquid found inside the coconut commonly referred to locally as "Buko Juice".

Netizens reacted to the figures that President Aquino reported about coco water exports. According to his SONA, coco water exports rose from 483,862 liters in 2009 to 1,807,583 liters in 2010 and to an astonishing 16,756,498 liters in 2011! The Dark Knight Rises Beyond Expectation

The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Have you watched the latest Batman movie? The last installment of Christopher Nolan's trilogy? Well, I'm not gonna spoil your excitement by telling the movie plot but I just want to say that if you're planning to watch the movie, well, do it fast and if you'll have the chance to watch it in an IMAX theater, it's not a waste of money. The movie lived up to what it promised: an epic conclusion to the Batman series starring Christian Bale as Batman himself.

Prepare to Watch The Dark Knight Rises
Before I watched the movie yesterday, I made sure that I prepared myself. Since this is the conclusion of the Batman trilogy, I decided to review the plot of the first two movies: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Thanks to Wikipedia for the free information.

Well, for those who haven't watched the first two installments, you really need to watch them to fully understand the story because the movie closes the unfinished businesses left out in the first two films. If you can't watch them, at least read the synopses. You can find a decent one in Wikipedia.

Batman and Catwoman
In the 2008 blockbuster movie Dark Knight, the superb performance of Heath Ledger playing the part of Joker, overshadowed the performance of Christian Bale and the attention of the audience is more focused on the sly moves of the villain instead of the protagonist himself. Well, in this movie, the Batman captured once again the screen, although the performance of the villain Bane is also well done.

And of course, Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Selina Kyle, more commonly referred to as the Catwoman, deserves everybody's praise. She superbly portrayed the Catwoman's personality of  being in the fuzzy line between the enemy and friend of the Batman. In my humble opinion, Hathaway made herself as one of the most memorable version of the Catwoman in all Batman movies.

Darker Theme
Christopher Nolan's movie series made the Batman far far above a typical kid superhero story. He made the Batman a grown-up's superhero. Personally, I'm not a fan of Batman until this movie. The movie has a more mature and darker theme, even darker than the first two in the series. The gloom of the pending doom in the Gothan City will inspire fear and hopelessness to the movie watchers. You'll really feel it in your seat.

Well I guess, one thing that I can criticize about this movie is the voice of Bane.Because he has a mask, his dialog is painfully hard to understand. Especially because we Filipinos were not native English speakers, the masked voice makes his speech doubly harder to comprehend. But I guess, at some point, it need to be so to be able to portray Bane's ruthlessness and spur terror in the audience.

Overall, The Dark Knight Rises is a huge success! And I'll tell you: you will miss an opportunity of watching a great movie in big screen if you don't go to the cinemas and watch this. Mark my word. I still remember the  last time I went out of the cinema fully satisfied. It was the blockbuster movie Avatar (2009). Well, in the case of the Dark Knight Rises, I felt super satisfied but with a little regret that I didn't watched it in IMAX.

The Dark Knight Rises is Now Showing in the Philippines

The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The epic third and final installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman movie series entitled "The Dark Knight Rises" is now showing in theaters here in the Philippines.

The movie will showcase the performances of stars from the previous two films of the series namely Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne (Batman), Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Batman's trusted assistant, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Batman's armorer, and Gary Oldman as Commissioner James Gordon, the honest police officer of Gotham City. There are also new faces in this sequel. They are Tom Hardy playing the role of Bane, the movie's prime antagonist and Anne Hathaway as Selena Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman).

The film will continue from where the story left in the 2008 The Dark Knight movie where Batman convinced Commissioner Gordon to charge him of all the bad things that happened because of the hero-turned-villain Two-Face. We can remember then that he ran out as fugitive and his hi-tech base was destroyed. But now that a new villain arises (Bane), will Batman come back and once again be Gotham City's hero?

Controversy Over Rotten Tomatoes Review
Although holding an impressive 87% positive mark in the popular film review and ranking company Rotten Tomatoes, the movie met a controversy after Rotten Tomatoes suspended the user comments for the film's review. The suspension came after series of negative, harsh and other offensive comments from the users on those reviewers who judged the movie as "rotten.

2008 Dark Knight is Hard to Match, Even to Surpass
Well, the 2008 epic movie, the second installment of this Batman series is a huge challenge for The Dark Knight Rises. The Dark Knight is a huge success back then grossing over 1 Billion US Dollars worldwide and obtaining critical acclaim from the movie critics. The performance of the late Heath Ledger as the psychotic villain Joker was consistently praised and eventually landed him a posthumous Academy Award. For this film, let us see how Nolan will try continue the already heated story of our favorite hero.

So, see you in theaters then.

Is Monday, July 23, 2012 (PNoy's Third SONA) a Holiday?

English: Mr. Noynoy Aquino
Pres. Noynoy Aquino (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Well, I guess many of us is asking whether Malacanang will declare Monday, July 23, 2012 as a national holiday because of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's third State of the Nation Address (SONA). Well, the answer is "probably not". Based on previous two SONA's (2010 nad 2011), Malacanang decided to make the SONA day, a regular working day to everyone. There is a reason to believe that it would be the same this year.

Also, as many of us must have already noticed, Aquino's administration is discrete with holidays. That is why, only in certain cases that he declares new holdays aside from those whom he already pre-programmed before the year begins. For 2012, Proclamation No. 295 list down specific holidays to be celebrated this year and SONA day is not included, although the President have the power to change it.

A Balance Between Rest and Work
President Aquino appears to be careful in balancing the workforce's need for rest and the need of the employers. Data shows that the Philippines is one of the countries with many holidays. Although we really need holidays for special occasions and rest, we should not forget that we also need to work to survive. In my humble opinion, I'll just follow what the government decides, since they have the overall picture of the entire nation.

How about you? What do you think? Should President Aquino declare July 23 SONA as holiday? Please write your comment.

Who is Edward Mordrake? The Original Two-face!

Two Faced
Two Faced (Photo credit: Son of Groucho)
I became curious about him because I saw his name trending in searches for the past week. Well, if you don't know him, here's some of the information about him that may make your hairs stand.

Edward Mordrake (also know as Edward Mordake) was reportedly an heir to an English nobility in the 19th century who have two faces. The other face cannot speak or eat but can laugh and cry. (Eerie!) He begged his doctors to remove the extra face because according to him, it whispered Satanic words at night. According to reports, no doctor would attempt to remove it. He committed suicide at the age of 23.

Does Edward Mordrake's Really Exists?
We'll, Edward Mordrake's existence is still debated until this day. There was no record of his birth or details about his condition. Although there have been few people who have a similar (having two faces) like him.

Bourne Legacy To Be Shown in the Philippines on SM Cinemas This August 8

Jeremy Renner arrives at the 82nd Academy Awards.
Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner
Mark your calendars on August 8, 2012 because SM Cinema will start showing the film Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton. The movie is expected to showcase action pack plot and amazing stunts. And the most exciting thing about this movie is the fact that many scenes in this movie were shot in Metro Manila and other parts of the country. On August, we will see Manila as represented by a Hollywood movie.

The Fourth Installment Bourne Movie Series
If you have watched the first three Bourne movies, you can easily relate to Bourne Legacy's plot. The first three was Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum. All three starred Matt Damon. Based on the novel series by Robert Ludlum, it tells the story of a man named Jason Bourne who, after being saved by fisherman as he float unconsciously in the Mediterranean sea, found himself deprived of his memory. As the movie goes, he discovered himself to be an assassin. And not just an assassin, but a top assassin trained by the US government under a special program called Operation Treadstone. In the end of the third sequel, Bourne successfully exposed those behind the illegal assassin training program and he goes underground.

In this fourth installment, Jeremy Renner (the star in the Academy acclaimed movie Hurt Locker) will play the role of Aaron Cross, an assassin from the Operation Outcome, successor of the Operation Treadstone. The story tells how he will try to escape the threat of being assassinated as the CIA decided to shut down the Operation Outcome.

See you in the SM Cinemas then!
For me, it's not just about watching Manila as shown in a foreign film. I honestly like the plot of the first three Bourne movies. And I think I'm not alone. Experts-wise, the series received generally positive reviews. Income-wise, the Bourne series is a huge success. Well, I only saw the trailer and it doesn't tell me anything about the plot of the movie. That is why I will definitely watch Bourne Legacy this coming August! See you in theaters then!

Palace Declares July 13, 2012 As National Day of Remembrance in Honor of Dolphy Quizon

Two days after the news of Dolphy's death broke out, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III declares Friday, July 13, 2012 as a national day of remembrance in honor of the late comedy king. In statement, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte says that "The President issued the proclamation in recognition of how the nation deeply feels the passing of Dolphy. In the proclamation, the President cited Dolphy as a man who will live on in Philippine cultural history—and in the hearts of many of his countrymen."
English: Dolphy, Filipino actor
English: Dolphy, Filipino actor (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Shed also added that the proclamation aims to encourage the Filipinos to reflect on Dolphy's contributions to art and artistry, his personal kindness and generosity, and deep patriotism.

A working day tomorrow

Proclamation 433 that declares the national day of remembrance for Dolphy doesn't mention that tomorrow will be a non-working holiday. With that, regular work schedules will pursue nationwide.

National Artist Award-giving Body in Hot Waters

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is now in hot waters for allegedly failing to give Dolphy the National Artist award in 2009 allegedly due to lame reasons such as the personal life of Dolphy as well as his gay roles. The public clamor started to get hot when Dolphy's health condition became known to the public. And now that he died, interest to NCCA was at all-time high.

In response to that, the government has issued a primer regarding the nature of the award and the qualification to receive it. Please see the primer here: http://www.gov.ph/the-order-of-national-artists/

The Internet is Abuzz at Dolphy's Death - RIP Dolphy

Philippine Entertainment industry King of Comedy Dolphy is dead at 83! This is after months of being confined to the hospital. And his death sends shockwave of internet buzz primarily through social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

As of the time of writing this article, the topic "RIP Dolphy" is trending on Twitter Worldwide (see screenshot below).

Dolphy (Rodolfo Vera Quizon, Sr.) has been one of the prolific actors in the Philippine cinema starring in hundreds of films and gaining numerous awards from several award-giving bodies.

Surprised by his death?
To some people, his death might be surprising due to early reports that his condition continues to improve. For instance, in an article publish at abs-cbnnews.com last Sunday, July 8, 2012, the doctors claimed that the veteran actor responds favorably in his pneumonia treatments.

Dolphy as a National Artist
There has been talks about giving Dolphy the National Artist award, probably the highest form of award given by the Philippine Government to Filipino artists. But it appears that the discussion didn't progressed. But now that he's dead, it is possible that the discussion may be rekindled  and eventually hand Dolphy the posthumous National Artist Award.
