Supreme Court Issues TRO Against Cybercrime Law

The Supreme Court of the Philippines issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the controversial Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The TRO will serve to prevent the law from being implemented pending the deliberation of the high court regarding the constitutionality of its disputed provisions.

The move follows the flood of complaints submitted to the the high court by different individuals and entities. Most of them feared that the law will suppress freedom of expression, invade individual privacy, and promote double jeopardy in cases of libel.

Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012

Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 is a law that defines cybercrime providing prevention, investigation , suppression and imposition of penalties to its violators. It was approved by President Aquino last September 12 and the implementation began last October 3.
