PROMO: Philippine Airlines Slashes Fourth Quarter Airfares

The fourth quarter of the year has always been very busy. There are many deadlines to meet, and many things to close out. But in spite of that, it is also a time for vacation as the government provides many holidays during that time. Personally, what I want to do during the holidays is to travel. I'm okay with simply driving to the next town as long as it will change my surroundings, giving me a break from the monotonous city life.  So yes, fourth quarter is indeed a great quarter of the year. Lesser Options in Flying Domestically Due to Airline Mergers

When San Miguel Corporation took over the helm of managing PAL and PAL Express (then Airphil Express), they decided to merge the operation of the two airline companies. Though the two airlines have been long-time sister companies, they have operated almost independently until Lucio Tan sold his majority stake to San Miguel . PAL Express was named Airphil Express before San Miguel acquired PAL The result of the consolidation is immediately evident. First, Airphil Express changed its name to PAL Express. Second, PAL Express stopped all flights that are common with PAL (e.g. Manila-Cebu). Then just recently, PAL Express suspended 35 Express inter-island flights leaving inter-island travelers with no other choice but Cebu Pacific.

I'm not really sure why PAL is having this promo, but yes, it was interesting. Starting today until June 30, you can select your seats for FREE on all their domestic flights using their online seat selector while booking your tickets. Here's the promo poster from Facebook.

Travel Tip: Don't be Late in the Airport

I was surprised by the news about PAL's move to penalize latecomers with additional fees . I actually thought that they have been doing that since the start. Well, Cebu Pacific is already doing that. The first time I actually felt it was in 2010. The story goes like this. My friend is scheduled to fly to Cebu after a week of vacation in his hometown in Marikina. It was a week after the deadly flood of typhoon Ondoy. Many roads were closed. He miscalculated his chances and he ended up 10 minutes late in the airport. And guess what, he was denied to check-in. He paid another 2500 pesos for the next trip. That was terrible but as I read through the Terms and Conditions, I realized what they did is valid. Two years later, I was going to the airport after a few days of vacation in Bulacan. In the past, it usually takes 3 hours from Bulacan to Airport. But it was not a usual day. Starting in East Ave, everything seems to be slow. The bus is slow. The traffic is terrible. We had to re...

Umbrellas for Check-in at the Airport

Image via Wikipedia If you will be travelling without check-in baggage like the famous Cebu Pacific Go-Lite promo, better not to bring your umbrellas. Before, we just fold our umbrellas and keep it inside our hand carried bags. Now, there's a new security order to include umbrellas in your check-in baggages. Well, again, if you happen to be travelling with Go-Lite ticket, then you would have to pay 400 pesos for baggage reinstatement. Experience in Mactan Airport I just had this experience when I traveled a few weeks ago. After getting the boarding pass from Cebu Pacific counter and paying the terminal fee, we are told at the final inspection that umbrellas should be checked-in. How annoying it is to imagine how long we been standing there in the line to the counters and to think that it was not even mentioned on the first inspection! One of my company had to go back to the counter and negotiate the matter. And here's the funny thing: it's not that easy to check ...

Update on Econolight Seats from Philippine Airlines (PAL)

Image via Wikipedia Econolight is the cheapest seat Philippine Airlines (PAL) is selling. Some econolight seats can go down to as low as 800 pesos. Three days ago, I was surfing their website to look for promos for the coming holidays. Then I came across a very interesting announcement: Philippine airlines version of Cebu Pacific’s “Go Lite” has a very good update. I’m not sure when it was first announced, but it was good news to everyone who loves to fly on PAL . Effective for bookings made on or after November 18 and for those whose travel is on or after December 1, the following changes will take effect. SEAT SELECTION Before, Econolight seats are located at the rear of the plane. For me, it’s OK because it’s nearer to the comfort rooms. But for some, it was not a good position. Now, they already removed this policy. You can now seat other than at the rear of the aircraft. MEALS Before, Econolight seats have no free “merienda” or meals. They will distinguish you because...
