After the long wait, Google's powerful chat application, Google Hangouts is now available for iOS devices. You can download it at the App Store for free.
For those few that are not familiar with Hangouts, it is a messaging application that allows users to send chat messages as well as video chats with their contacts. It was introduced in June 2011 as part of Google+ social platform. What's unique about Hangouts is the ability to video conference with up to 10 people, each at different locations.
Before Hangouts, Google have different messaging applications. One is built within Gmail, the two others were built-in apps in Android - Google+ messenger and Gtalk. They also distribute Gtalk for Windows as a Freeware. Now, except for Gtalk for Windows, all other apps were merged into one, Hangouts.
Its availability to iOS devices is the latest update on Hangouts. With that move, the current users will be able to expand their range of contacts to include iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users.
Hangouts is expected to compete against Apples default video chat app, Facetime.
